Brief Overview of the Department of Power Mechanics Engineering Technology
The Department of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineering Technology was established in 1998, and its first cohort graduated in the 2002–2003 academic year. In 2018, the department was renamed the Department of Power Mechanics Engineering Technologies to better align with labor market requirements, the rapid advancements in energy and thermal engineering, and to unify its designation with corresponding departments in other Engineering Technical Colleges.
The department is committed to preparing highly qualified engineering technologists with strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills in power mechanics and energy engineering. It aims to meet the needs of industrial and service sectors while contributing to sustainable development. The department also emphasizes continuous improvement of the educational process, promotion of scientific research, and adoption of emerging technologies to serve society and enhance academic excellence.
Following its restructuring, the department comprised three specialized branches: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technologies, Renewable Energy Technologies, and Production and Automation Technologies. During the first and second academic years, all students follow a common curriculum. Beginning in the third year, students are assigned to one of the specialized branches based on their academic performance and personal preference. Since 2022, admission to the Production and Automation Technologies branch has been suspended, while the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technologies and Renewable Energy Technologies branches continue to operate.
The department adopted the annual academic system from its establishment until 2021, after which it transitioned to the course-based system and subsequently implemented the Bologna Process beginning with the 2022–2023 academic year. The undergraduate program spans four years and combines theoretical instruction with extensive practical and laboratory training. Upon successful completion, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Technical Engineering in Power Mechanics Engineering Technologies, which qualifies them for membership in the Iraqi Engineers Association and enables them to practice engineering in various industrial and service sectors.
In addition to its undergraduate program, the department offers postgraduate studies in Thermal Engineering Technologies, including the Higher Diploma program, established in 2020, and the Master of Science (M.Sc.) program, established in 2021. These programs aim to prepare researchers and specialists capable of advancing scientific knowledge and conducting high-quality applied research, thereby strengthening the department’s academic reputation at both the national and regional levels while contributing to community development and sustainable growth.
